My (fragrant) Home

Hello again my friends. Today has been a great day! My hunny and I went out today to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. Well technically my anniversary isn't until Friday the 23rd but my hunny works that day and well I think you get the point!

We got the kiddos off to school today and then got ourselves ready to explore. We went to Walmart, the Yankee Candle Company, to Lowes and to Sonic. It was an adventure to us because the closest Sonic is a ways away in a town we haven't been to before. This may not sound like a great anniversary lunch to many of you but we hadn't had Sonic food for 8 years (since we moved from Jacksonville, Florida). We loved that little drive-in place when we lived there and have missed it thoroughly since moving. While we were out and about I bought some things that contributed to my bloggy subject, "My Fragrant Home"

*****

I love to burn candles. I don't burn them so much for the light but for the scent. I love to walk into a room and smell a clean laundry smell or the smell of sugar cookies. You can create so many new ambiances in a room with the lighting of a candle. The only thing I really don't like about burning candles is the smoke, the possible lead, and how fast they go away. Also, I have a tendency to forget to blow them out when I go to bed or if I leave which is very dangerous. So I decided to try something new.

At Walmart today, I bought some tart and oil warmers. This one sitting on my dresser in my room was $3.00. It uses a tea light candle to warm the oil in the little bowl on top. I chose a tea light burner for my bedroom because I do not have an outlet available where I wanted to set it. I also wanted to use oils for my bedroom. I love clean smells. Especially clean laundry smells. In my bedroom, I will be warming Clean Linen scented oil.

The little warmer in the above picture I have had for a while. I would use it to warm the leftover candle wax from my burned out candles.

As you can see it is perfect for my kitchen because it has pictures of kitcheny items all over it. I think fruity and foody smells should be in the kitchen so right now I am warming blueberry muffin scented wax in it. It smells soooo yummy!

Here is my anniversary gift. It was $15.00 and was also bought at walmart. It is also a wax warmer. It uses a bulb inside to heat the wax. I chose this one for my living room. It sits proudly on my fireplace sending wonderful scents into the air. My living room scents are usually the same type of clean ones from my bedroom but I also like to do musk types of scents and seasonal scents. Right now I am warming a tart from Yankee Candle Factory. It is a musk type scent called Nature's Paintbrush. It smells heavenly and very fallish.
Here are my scent purchases from today's adventures. The little round ones came from Yankee Candle Factory. These tarts were on sale 12 for $10.00. From Top left the scents are: Soft Cotton, Red Berry and Cedar, Rainforest. From Bottom left: Nature's Paintbrush, Winterland, and Coffee. The little box on the right is Homemade Blueberry Muffin scented wax cubes I bought from Walmart. There are six little cubes in the package and it only cost $2.00. The coffee scent and the blueberry muffin will be kitchen scents. I think the rest will be living room with the exception of Winterland. It has a kind of minty smell so it could be both.

I was reading Mrs. Teresa Kasner's blog the other day and she talked about her lovely violet sunning in her window so I thought I would share my own African violet.

See how pretty it's leaves are? It has bloomed a few times this year. It sits by my sink by the kitchen window. It seems very happy in this spot and it makes me happy to see it while I complete the very mundane task of dish washing.

Also, since today is Wednesday and soup night I wanted to show you all our dinner!

A wonderful, warm pot of chili! My daughter actually stayed home instead of going with her friend so she could eat my "fabulously famous" (her words) chili. I felt that notion deserved a blog nod.

Well there it is for you all. I hope I haven't bored you too much! I should have gotten more pictures of our adventure but I am very forgetful when it comes to picture taking.

Until next time, Be Blessed!

Just keep Stitching

Good morning friends! I am normally not a morning person but I have decided to change my perspective a little bit. I see the lag time between kiddo awakenings as "quiet time". You see I have to get my oldest daughter up for school a whole hour before the other three. Our school staggers the opening times for the High/Middle school and the Elementary schools. Our High/middle school lets in at 7:30am and the Elementary school doesn't let in until 9:00am. My daughter doesn't mind getting to school earlier because she will get out of school at 2:30 in the afternoon. My other 3 has to be in school until a quarter til 4. I am still not sure if I like this staggering but it does seem to cut down on traffic at let out times.

*******

I have been going through some serious personal changes as of late. Most of you who read my blog know about my past and dealing with panic attacks and depression and the years I spent in my home too panicky to leave. During that time crochet was my only friend. It would take me ages to finish projects as I did sleep a lot, I wasn't very fast, and I would lose interest. BUT I loved to crochet when my mind was at it's worst. It saw me through and gave me something solid to hold on to as a goal. As long as I had something I needed to finish, I couldn't let the depression take me.

For the past 2 maybe a little more years I have been getting out and re-learning the world. 6 years is a long time to stay in my home. Most of my 20s I was a hermit. I have so much to see and learn that sometimes my hooks get frozen and I honestly feel like I have lost something. Almost like a part of me is missing. Then once I slow down a little bit, I grab my hooks and that old friend is back, the void I was feeling is gone, all is right with the world again.

I experienced one of these times over the past month. I have been so wrapped up in finding ways of maintaining my budget, couponing, house keeping, body I just didn't pick up my hooks. I had a few projects that needed finished and I just couldn't bring myself to get them done.

Happily though, I found my hooks again, thawed them out and I have been on a roll ever since!

*********

I have a ta-dah for all of you. I am a little backwards in showing off my work as I tend to take it to facebook, ravelry, and then my blog so alot of you have probably already seen this little blanket but anyway.....

Ta-dah! This cute little baby blanket was a joy and was quick to crochet (once I really got on it). It is made with Bernat Baby Jacquards yarn in the Spearmint Candy color way. It is a nice yarn to work with. It glides on and off the hook with ease and doesn't split. It is so soft and it is a great baby blanket yarn.

My favorite part of this little blanket is how the stitches form little hearts. The pattern came out of a Leisure Arts Little Book Named So Sweet Baby Afghans. Oh and one of the best things about this afghan is I didn't have to buy the yarn. My sister-in-law sent it to me! She tends to surprise me with little bits and bobs mailed all the way from Florida!!!!

******

Not only did I finish a project but I am also working on another. I have been hooking my little heart out making granny squares! My honey brought home some nice Caron Simply Soft yarn one day. It sat on my shelf for a long time until.......

.........I had an epiphany. Granny squares, granny squares, granny squares.

I have some lovely burgundy ones, and sunny yellow ones, and some made in multicolors.

I have some in green and I will have some in blue.

Just hooking, hooking, hooking. I'm not really sure the pattern these granny squares will be joined together in but I love making these quick and simple squares.

Oh there is one word of caution when using Caron Simply Soft. It is a very slippery yarn. In this picture you can see the sheen in the skeins. If you don't weave in your ends and finish your work very carefully, they will come undone. My mom made a beautiful daisy blanket only to have it unravel after one wash! Other than that this yarn is so nice to crochet with and is super soft to touch!

*******

I also have a planned project! (You see, I am on a roll) A while back I bought 10 beautiful skeins of Stylecraft Special Dk yarn from Deramores. It has been sitting..............

..............on my shelf just waiting for me to decide what it shall become. I think I have figured it out! I have decided on this throw on the Red Heart website. What do you all think?

Well, I am going to quit writing for now and get my Elementary crew motivated for their school day! Thank you all for stopping by and until next time....Be Blessed!

Coupon organizing, weekly savings, weekly menu

Hello again my friends. Today is a beautiful sunny day here in Ohio but it is blustery and cold. 53 degrees in my little spot of town. I can't really complain though. I love the sun shine!

Today I'm gonna tell you about my week in couponing, organizing and cooking.

I had to change my method of arranging my coupons. I was using the binder method and I just didn't have the time or patience to keep up with it. You file all of your clipped coupons in baseball card sheets. Whenever you get new coupons you have to move the coupons around and let me tell you, I just don't have the time for all of that. So I went to Walmart and bought a 26 file expandable file folder.

You can see it in this picture. I closes up nicely, has a nice carrying handle and isn't as heavy as the binder was. So far so good. I like it.

As you can see here, on the inside is these nice tabs. I have all of my categories on the tabs and I used sheets of printer paper and divided each tab into sub headings...well you can see better in the next picture...

Ok there you go. See The cheese on paper. It is under the category refrigerated. Using this folder I just clip my coupons, paper clip the ones that are alike together and organize them in their sub-category according to expiration date. The cool thing is I don't have to pull them out to know what I have.

Here is my handy dandy list I keep in my couponing file. In this picture I am showing the Coupon policy for the store I use. My store is in the Central Ohio Region and doubles coupons who's value is less than 99 cents. On the opposite side of this policy I have the Cincinnati Region coupon policy. I am right in between the two regions and depending on which town I go to, I need one of these two policies.

Also in my handy dandy list is a rock bottom price cheat sheet I printed from the Saving Well Spending Less website. The nice lady who oversees this website is from Florida so her prices may be a little more than mine but since I am just starting out, it gives me a nice place to start and reference. I can keep track and change the prices as I go along.

Finally in my list is my actual coupon list. You can see I type out what the coupon is for and any exclusions for the coupon. I write out the value, the expiration date, and how many of the coupons I have. This list comes out at the stores and I can easily find which coupons I need.

I don't go to the store all willy nilly. I do make a list of my needs. Right now I am spending alot more than I should be on my groceries and such because I don't have a stockpile. Please don't think I am one of those crazy people on the Extreme Couponing tv show. I don't want to hoard goods. The purpose of a stockpile is to have enough goods to last until the next time the prices are at rock bottom for those items. For instance, recently my store had Dial Hand Soap on sale and with my coupon I could get it for 18 cents. They also had  Dawn Dish Liquid on sale and I could get it for 99 cents. Since the prices are at rock bottom (or won't be able to get them much cheaper) you buy enough to last until a similar sale comes along. Usually 3-6 months. So, I'd say a person should buy no more than 10 of these items. That should be enough to get you through until the next sale. Sadly, I have a small stockpile. I only have 8 toothbrushes and 3 tubes of toothpaste in my stockpile so I have to pretty  much buy everything we need as we need it. So right now I am trying to make sure I stock up on items when they are at rock bottom prices so eventually I will be able to shop from my stockpile and plan my meals around the meat sales and such.

Here you can see my dry erase calendar. Don't you love the picture of our family my 6 year old drew? You can see I have my meals planned out according to our themed nights.
Monday=Casserole
Tuesday=Pasta
Wednesday=Soup
Thursday=Beef/pork
Friday=flex (take out, leftovers, sammies whatever)
Saturday=slow cooker
Sunday=Chicken

What I do is look at the sales papers I get on Saturday and see what is on sale and what I have coupons for. Then I plan my menu around that. This the stores around me didn't really have good sales.  But I did take advantage of a few items. My total money spent on things we needed this week was $150.76. I spent $29.76 at Walmart on my case file for my coupons, belts for my sons, cat medicine, magnetic paper clip tins that were clearanced to $1.50. No coupons used.

At one of the supermarkets in my town, Community Markets, I bought 2 gallons of milk for $2.50 each. Normal price is $2.99. I also used coupons to get toaster strudels, bologna, and coffee. I spent $21.74 and saved $8.00.

I got the rest of my groceries finished at Kroger. The best deal I got was almond milk for $1.18 a carton (normally $2.89) and toilet paper for 25 cents a roll. I spent $100.26 and saved $28.69. So in total I saved $36.69. Not good but not too bad. At least I saved a little right.

Ok my friends, I have bored you enough on this. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them and I will answer as best I can. Until next time....Be Blessed.

Never Forget

9/11/01

We will never forget.

We will never forget the lives lost when American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 175 hit the World Trade Center and those majestic building fell.

We will never forget when American Airlines flight 77 hit the pentagon.

We will never forget those brave souls on United Airlines flight 93 who found out what happened elsewhere that day and decided to fight back hoping to save the lives of others and their own lives but ended up losing their lives in that field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

We will never forget those who have struggled with illness since that day and those who have lost their lives due to those illnesses.

We will never forget all of the troops who fought back. Those who are injured, those who payed the ultimate price, and those who continue to fight on our behalf.

We will never forget where we were and what we were doing when we learned the news.

We will never forget watching the events unfold on that day and the whole of the United States becoming united as ONE!

We will never forget that day when we stopped being individuals and we all became AMERICANS.

I will never forget!

Grocery Budget/ Couponing/Weekly Meal Planning for 9/5/11

Hello friends. How is your day? I have to say my day is going well! I didn't sleep well last night but got myself out of bed this morning so I could go to the bank and go to the grocery store. I see the grocery store as a challenge I must step up to. I like to get out of there getting the things we need and some things we want with as little out of pocket as I can. I usually shop at Sav a Lot which has a store conveniently in my town. They have nice meats but they have limited variety of food. Good quality, limited variety. Most of the food at Sav a Lot are the sav a lot brands. However, they will get deals in with brand names like Hamburger Helper,  Maxwell House, A1... well you get the picture.

My problem is that I like to have choices. I want a wider variety of produce, cereals, meats, well everything; that's where Kroger and Walmart come in. I have a problem with Kroger and Walmart too though. The foods there are way too expensive. That is where my coupons come in. I have a budget for my household. My budget is an absolute must because we are a family of six living on a meager income. We try to use as little water as possible, save energy as much as possible, I grow food in the summer to store for winter, I use coupons and am trying to get a stockpile (which I am not doing very well at the moment :( ). We even do most of our clothes shopping at thrift stores and yard sales. Most of the things we have furnished our home with have been given to us or have been bought at bottom dollar. We try to be as frugal as possible. Grocery shopping is a big deal in our house. I can easily spend over $500 a month on groceries. However, I only have $400 budgeted. I want to cut that $400 in half and still eat good quality, whole foods. Seems impossible doesn't it.

I have a plan. I am just starting out with budgeting, couponing, stockpiling, and meal planning. However, I have been saving coupons as much as possible. I eventually want to have a system down so I can plan my menus around weekly sales ads and my coupons so I can get the absolute best deals possible on the foods my family eats. I have been able to get some items free so far such as milk, eggs, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, shampoo. I have also gotten things like laundry products, toilet paper, paper towels, ziploc bags, meats, cereals, and organic products for less than a dollar. I just haven't managed to do it on a stockpiling scale. I know it will come eventually but for now I have $100 a week to spend on our food needs. I have to get breakfast items, lunch items, snack items, and dinner items. Not to mention things like chocolate milk mixes, ice cream, hot cocoa, coffee, and occasionally some soda. I also budget a little extra for holidays but I still would love to get by with spending less than $200 a month on groceries.

So far I have implemented several things. First, I make sure to buy at least 3 Sunday papers for coupons. I keep a detailed coupon log and my coupons are safely tucked into a tabbed binder. I keep my coupons organized in baseball card sleeves under their tabs (such as breakfast, beverage, paper products, feminine hygiene, ect). I use my log to see what coupons I have, how many of them I have, when they expire, and if they can be doubled. Each week I rotate the coupons around. The ones that expire that month are taken to the front and all are organized by expiration date.

Then I take my coupon log and the sales papers for my preferred stores (Walmart, Kroger, Rite Aid, Sav a Lot) and I go through the ads and see what kind of deals I can find. I also keep my store's coupon policy handy just so I don't mess up) Recently I have been able to buy Dawn Dish Liquid for $0.99 for a decent sized bottle, Liquid hand soap for $0.18, and have gotten 3 boxes of Playtex Tampons for free.

I have also implemented menu planning. To make my menu planning easier, I have taken the advice I found on The Morris Tribe website and now have themed dinners. Monday night is casserole night, Tuesday is pasta night, Wednesday is soup night, Thursday is beef or pork night, Friday is flex night where we can eat out, leftovers, or just whatever I have to make, Saturday is slow cooker night and our movie or game and ice cream night, and Sunday is chicken night. I already have several interchangeable recipes for each of my categories. Now that I have both my couponing situated and my menus situated, I need to merge the two together and plan my menus around whatever I can find on sale or have stockpiled.  I know it will take me a little while to get used to it but I will achieve my goal of feeding my family for less than $50 a week.
*********************************

This week I spent $120 dollars on groceries. I was out of a lot of needed stuff and I went a little crazy on snacks for the kiddos. So I must tame that. However I have stuck to my meal plan.

Monday-Casserole Night
Last night was casserole night and my family voted to have my baked macaroni and cheese and a nice garden salad. Want a recipe?
Erin's Baked Macaroni and Cheese
5 tbsp butter, divided (unsalted)
1/3 cup flour
1 cup milk
1 box (1lb) elbow macaroni
1 (2lb) box Velveeta, cut into 1 inch chunks
Shredded cheddar Jack cheese
Ritz Crackers (10)
Lil Smokies cocktail Sausages

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook macaroni according to directions on box.
Meanwhile, melt 4 tbsp butter in large saucepan. Once boiling add flour, cook 2 mins. Add milk and return to boil. Add cheese chunks stirring constantly until all cheese is melted. Then add a couple handfuls of the shredded cheese. Keep stirring until cheese is melted.

Drain macaroni and return to pot. Add cheese mixture and stir well. Transfer to a well greased 13x9 lasagna pan. Melt 1tbsp butter in microwave. Crush ritz crackers and mix with butter. Sprinkle cracker mixture on top of mac and cheese in lasagna pan. Sprinkle top with more shredded cheese. Scatter little smokies over the top of the mac and cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until the edges are bubbly and cheese on top is melted.
Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes.
Cut, serve, enjoy!

 Tuesday-Pasta Night
Tonight we are having South of the Border Chicken and Pasta Skillet. I am a subscriber to Kraft Food and Family magazine ( I highly recommend it) and found this recipe in the magazine. You can follow the link to find the recipe on the Kraft Foods website.
*
 Wednesday-Soup Night

We are having Creamy Corn and Potato Chowder. It is a wonderful dish found in the free e-book called "Just Get Em Fed" found on the Morris Tribe website. The E-book is on the right hand side if you scroll down a little.
*
Thursday-Beef or Pork night

I will be utilizing the Meatloaf  recipe from the " Just Get Em Fed" e-book.
*
Friday-Flex night

I am treating my kiddos to pizza this night. I also think we will be heading to our local High School Football game.
*
Saturday-Slow Cooker Night
I will be using another recipe from Kraft Foods. Easy Slow Cooker A1 Swiss Steak. I haven't tried this one yet but it sounds delicious none the less.
*
Sunday-Chicken night

Yet another Kraft Foods recipe: One Pan Chicken and Potato Bake . The link has a nice video on how to make this dish.

Remembering 9/11, Conspiracies, and my Grandpa

Hello again my friends. I am having trouble sleeping tonight. I really don't understand insomnia sometimes. I can be dead tired and as soon as my head hits the pillow I am wide awake! It is absolutely dreadful on nights like this one when I know I absolutely have to get up at 6:30 am to wake my daughter for school. Since my body has decided to reject sleep, I thought I would blog about some deep subjects for many off us.

9/11 will be remembered by all of us as a day of tragedy. So many people lost their lives in those horrific, senseless attacks. I can remember that day very vividly. We lived in Jacksonville, Florida at the time. My oldest daughter was 2 and my youngest daughter was 6 months old. My boys weren't even a thought. My dad and his girlfriend at the time had flown down from Ohio for a visit a few days earlier. September 11, 2001 he was supposed to be flying back. My hubby had training for his new job early that Tuesday morning. He was back in time for us to go to the airport to see my dad off. His flight was to leave around 9:30 or 10 that morning. My hubby picked the girls and me up and we headed off to the airport which was about a 10-15 minute drive from where we lived. On the way my hubby was telling me about an airplane crash into a building in New York. I didn't think too much of it since planes do crash rather frequently. I just shrugged it off as if it were nothing.

We arrived at the airport and found a parking spot next to a burgundy car. There were two ladies putting bags inside the trunk of the car. We got out and was getting the stroller out of the trunk of our car when the one of the ladies informed us that we were not allowed to take strollers or any bags of any kind into the airport. When we asked why she stated, " You haven't heard? America is under attack. Terrorists have crashed planes into the World Trade Center in New York". I began to realize the gravity of the situation right then. The lady proceeded to tell us that all flights all over the United States were grounded.

We put the stroller, purse, and diaper bag into the trunk of the car and went inside the airport to try to find my dad. The place was a mad house. People were frantically calling other people. There were no empty phone booths. The lobby and concourses were packed full of people. Some were mad, some were crying, some were lost. We were getting bumped into. My daughter was almost knocked out of my arms at one point. No one was allowed into the concourses or even the hallways of the concourses unless that person was leaving the airport.

We didn't find my dad. We had only missed him by about 5 minutes. He rented a car and drove back to Ohio. On our way back to our home we turned on the radio and all we heard was the horror stories. I really didn't grasp all that was going on until we arrived back at our house and I turned on the television. There, on every channel, was pictures of these two skyscrapers with holes in them with smoke and fire blowing out. There were people gasping and crying. People were jumping out of the buildings. Then the first tower fell. I was in disbelief. God had blessed me with the gifts of empathy and compassion and I could feel what was written on every ash laden face. I was in tears, scared, shocked, praying.

I watched the events post 9/11 unfold day after day. I started feeling sorry for those who lost their lives at the Pentagon and on Flight 93 that went down in Pennsylvania. You rarely heard about them. It was all about New York. Still, I felt the hope and rejoiced when a survivor was brought out of the rubble but that too came to an end as the days went on. I haven't missed a documentary, a series, a movie, anything that has pertained to that fateful day.

With that being said and my need to learn as much as I can about stuff, I have watched videos on youtube.com and read documents that I have came across pertaining to that day. There are so many conspiracy theories out there now. Some say there were explosions in the seconds before the planes hit the World Trade Center; like a missle had been shot into the building first. Some say when the towers fell, there were explosions on every floor, like a demolition job and that is the reason they didn't fall over, they collapsed on themselves. Some say flight 93 didn't crash in that field. The "scar" from it was already there or that flight 93 wasn't a hero flight where all the passengers fought back BUT the plane was shot down by the military.

Other theories involve the people involved. It is a fact that the first President Bush had "unfinished business" overseas from the Gulf War as he didn't bring down Sadam Hussein. It is also a fact that Osama Bin Laden and The Bushes have some common oil interests and are partners in some aspects of the business. Some think that this attack was so Younger President Bush could finish what his daddy started. Some say it was to hike up oil. The newest one is that Bin Laden is not dead. America didn't see a body and that is why those men lost their lives in that helicopter crash not too long ago.

Now friends please don't get me wrong, I, myself, don't really care too much for conspiracy theories. I just know that thousands of men, women, and children lost their lives for some reason unknown to me. I want to make sense of it. I don't want to forget what happened on that day. I will always remember those horrifying images. I pray for the families and I hope nothing like this happens again!

*****

My Grandpa is also tied in with the 9/11 stuff although not directly. My grandpa was 71 years old when all this happened. He had had a quadruple bypass only a week before these events. He was released from the hospital and was taken back because he had another heart attack. I was called on September 9th by my mom and my grandma who were in Macon, Georgia with my grandpa. I kept close tabs on his condition. I was told he was doing ok. He was hanging in there. They had him on air. My grandpa had sleep apnea and I always saw him on air so that wasn't a shock to me.

Whoa I am getting a little ahead of myself. You need some background. My mom and dad split up when I was 5. My mom moved to Georgia where my grandma and grandpa lived. Mom and dad divorced when I was 6. I saw my dad 6 weeks out of the summer and every other holiday if arrangements could be made. This all occurred until I was 11. At that time I moved in with my dad in Ohio for 3 years and back with my mom in Georgia when I was 14. After I moved back to my mom, I didn't see my dad again until my high school graduation when I was 18. Sooooo....My grandpa was the father figure in my life. He did all the things dads were supposed to do. I love him very much and he was so much a part of my life......
......he walked me down the aisle when I got married. (my own father didn't come to my wedding)

Now back to my story before the background.

On September 9th I was told by my mom and my grandma that my grandpa was doing fine, on air (I thought like oxygen). I asked them if they thought I should come up there and I was told no.

September 12th I get a phone call. It is my step-dad. I can hear sobbing in the background. He was telling me that my grandpa, my father figure had passed away. I went numb, I didn't talk, I went to my room.

When I was called back to be told of the arrangements I found out that my grandpa had been on life support for a week. They signed to take him off as his heart rate was getting slower and slower. I was furious. I didn't get to say goodbye because I was made to believe he was ok, just had the usual oxygen on. (that's a whole new blog post)

I didn't go to his funeral. I couldn't bear to see him laying there. My family got mad at me for that and I was told that I just lost my grandfather but they (my mom) had lost a dad. I was being selfish. They didn't get he was like my dad too.

So you see, this year marks 10 years ago that our country lost its safety and security and that I lost my grandfather.

I will never forget either.
